The Collaboration: Hollywood’s Pact with Hitler

The shocking story of Hollywood’s dealings with Nazi Germany is told for the first time in a new book, The Collaboration: Hollywood’s Pact with Hitler by Ben Urwand. After nine years of digging in archives in Germany and the U.S., Urwand reveals the complex web of interactions between Hollywood studios and the Nazi government in the 1930s. In order to keep the German market open for their films, the studios (mostly headed by Jews) followed the instructions of the Nazi consul in LA, abandoning or changing movies that would have exposed the horrors of Nazism and Germany’s persecution of the Jews. Ben Urwand is a Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University. Before pursuing his career as a historian, he worked in the production department at Fox Studios Australia.
