Speaker: James Thomas, Reader in Local and Maritime History, University of Portsmouth
The talk will focus on the close relationship built up between Portsmouth and the Russian navy during the years after 1765. Themes covered include the role of the dockyard, of Russian officers and men, issues relating to health and how the vibrant community of Portsmouth reacted to such maritime visitors.
James is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the Historical Association. He has published several books and numerous papers and articles.
