Join Laurie Stewart-Furneaux from Hornton History Group for an illustrated talk delving into tales of changing village life.
Why was Hornton described as being ‘on the fringe of civilisation’ in 1840? How did this remote village overcome poverty and hardship to become almost self-sufficient in daily supplies and skills, ranging from home heating and haircuts, to groceries and medical care?
Milk, eggs, bread, butter and bacon all came from Hornton sources. So did the water for the tin bath, often shared once a week, and the wood to make the cart wheel and window frame.
As well as basic needs, generations of villagers turned their hands to countless trades and crafts, from tailoring and millinery to masonry and metalworking.
But this small settlement in Banburyshire also had its share of scandals and mysteries...
