A Dickensian Evening

Actor Gerald Dickens, Charles Dickens’s great-great-grandson, performs excerpts on childhood from the author’s best-loved works. Their programme includes readings from Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol, accompanied by pianist Elizabeth Hayes who performs a charming suite of pieces by Robert Schumann. The programme also includes Doctor Marigold, one of Charles Dickens’ most popular readings. The Doctor of the title is a market Cheap Jack, name in honour of a doctor who assisted at his birth. On the surface he is a trader with a rapid sales-patter, but underneath there lies a story both moving and heart breaking. In support of the Foundling Museum and the Charles Dickens Museum.
