Academic programme: The Georgian Officer Corps, 1740-1800

Dr Alastair Massie, Head of Academic Access, leads a four-week course examining the officers of the 18th-century British Army, ranging from the senior officers at its head to its regimental officers. The circumstances of an officer’s advancement - and in particular the points where the careers of different soldiers intersect - will be scrutinised, as well as the manner in which those careers came to a close: in glory, ignominy, or somewhere in between. Each talk will be illustrated with paintings and pictures of objects from the National Army Museum’s unparalleled collections, and from elsewhere.
