Join us and make your own turbines in our recreated factory, hear from local experts and discover the many roles women were required to fill at this time.
Our Learning Team is engaging with school children across the region to help us tell the story of the munitionettes working along both banks of the Tyne, focusing particularly on Parsons Factory in Heaton.
Charles Parsons, the inventor of the steam turbine engine, employed his daughter, Rachel, to recruit and train the new female workers in the factory. After the war Rachel was required, along with all women employed during the war, to give up her new role to make way for the men returning home.
Find out more about Rachel’s story, and many others like it, and immerse yourself in this important part of history.
