50 years ago, in June 1967 – the Summer of Love – Jimi Hendrix played one of the most iconic performances of the sixties, if not ever. Having “torn Europe to pieces” after arriving in London in 1966, this was Hendrix’s comeback to his native USA, where he had previously been performing in tiny, New York clubs as Jimmy James & the Blue Flames. Hendrix arrived in the US a relative unknown, apart from those who had witnessed his performances in Britain, and “when he left the stage, he had graduated from rumor to legend”.
Leading our speakers for the day will be legendary journalist Keith Altham. Not only has Keith interviewed pretty much every iconic 60s & 70s artist, from The Beatles and The Stones to Franks Zappa and Led Zeppelin, he is probably most famous for the time he spent with Jimi Hendrix.
Schedule of speakers:
Dr. Christian Lloyd – author of Hendrix at Home: a Bluesman in Mayfair, Christian will be talking about Hendrix’s impact on the London music scene and the weeks leading up to Hendrix’s Monterey performance.
Nigel Jones – our resident guitar teacher will be using his Fender Strat and some of the same effects pedals Hendrix used to demonstrate how Jimi created the unique guitar sound that blew the audience away at Monterey.
Keith Altham – The legendary rock journalist, and Hendrix’s PR guru, Keith will be recounting some of the amazing experiences he shared with Jimi, including coming up with the idea for him to light his guitar on fire, and being the last person to interview Hendrix only 5 days before his death in 1970.
