Art and the army

Taking inspiration from our War Paint exhibition, an expert panel will discuss how art, historically and today, influences public perceptions of the army. Artists have used the army as a subject for hundreds of years, for numerous reasons. Their works have influenced public opinion about the army - sometimes glorifying battles and romanticising soldiering, or revealing the human suffering and reality of warfare. In conjunction with our War Paint exhibition, we’re bringing together a panel of experts to discuss how public opinion is shaped by artistic representations of the army and conflict. Panellists Victoria Syme-Taylor (chair): Senior Lecturer, Defence Studies Department, King’s College, London David Cotterell: British artist; Professor of Fine Art, University of Brighton Gabriel Koureas: Senior Lecturer, Department of History of Art, Birkbeck, University of London Christy Lange: American writer and art critic, Associate Editor of frieze magazine
