This talk will put Roman Cirencester into context. In what ways was it like other Roman towns in SW Britain (particularly Gloucester; Dorchester and Exeter), and in what respects does it stand apart from these places? The talk will draw heavily on recent archaeological work, most of it executed in advance of redevelopment. These have provided many new insights and over-turned old theories. Neil Holbrook is Chief Executive of Cotswold Archaeology and has a long standing interest in the archaeology of Roman Cirencester.
