The Men Who Said No

As part of York Castle Museum’s First World War Exhibition 1914: When the World Changed Forever, York Quakers have curated an exhibition that looks at the stories of some of York’s 220 known Conscientious Objectors. Through photography and poignant extracts from personal statements, including recently discovered documents thought to have been destroyed in the 1920s, you will hear about those who challenged conscription, the reasoning behind their decisions not to go to war and the punishments they endured. The Community Room at York Castle Museum invites community groups to display works that relate to the First World War.
