The splendour of Baroque

Baroque art is characterised by rich colour, intense light, and dark shadows, which create a heightened sense of drama and emotion. Painted figures are powerfully realistic and appear caught in mid-action. Sculpture and the decorative arts swirl with energy. Church design takes on a new dynamism, engaging the viewer emotionally and physically. On this two-week course, discover the purpose and meaning of this extravagant and exuberant style in painting, sculpture and architecture, and learn about its social, religious and political context in 17th-century Europe. We will analyse the works of a variety of artists including Caravaggio, Velázquez, and Rubens, and also reflect on the legacy of the Baroque in art and culture today.
