Wooden Horses: The Early Occupation of Cirencester

Evening Lecture with Catherine Hoggarth Thursday 29 September, 7-8.30pm Beneath Cirencester and the mosaic floors of Corinium lay the remains of a first century military fort. Focusing on objects from the museum's early Roman collection, this talk will explore what we know and can theorize about the life of the Roman auxiliary cavalry at Cirencester in the first century AD. How did the different units differentiate themselves within the confines of the Roman military machine? Did they keep their horses inside or outside the fort? What was the purpose of the Hippika gymnasia? This talk will also consider how questions like these can further our understanding of the early Roman occupation of Cirencester. Catherine Hoggarth is a PhD student at the University of Kent researching the bridges of ancient Rome.
