Time to remember: an event to mark the centenary of the first two minute silence

We invite you to join us to remember the first two minute silence which took place in Farnham in May 1916. Before a fair and auction organised by local farmers to raise funds for the Red Cross during WWI, the people of Farnham gathered and stood in silence and solidarity “as a token of respect to the memory of those who have fallen in the War, to the Wounded, to the Prisoners and to those who are fighting for their Country”. This was probably the first two minute silence in the world. On Sunday 1 May Farnham will gather for a procession, music, re-enactment and May Day fair hundred years on. This special event will be marked with: 10.30am: A procession along Castle Street 10.50am: A short ceremony, a specially-commissioned performance by Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment Band and local musicians, followed by a two minute silence 11.10am: Follow the band and process to Gostrey Meadow 11.20am–4pm: May Day fair on Gostrey Meadow featuring steam fairground rides, exhibitions, more music and a May pole. Light refreshments will be on sale and we encourage you to bring a picnic. Come and find the Museum of Farnham's exhibition on Gostrey Meadow to find out more about the original event and to take part in a special oral history project. As part of this event we are also inviting you to write your own poems on remembrance or to loan a photograph of men and women from Farnham who died in service, to be included in this special event. For further information, or to drop off your photograph or poem, please get in touch with Farnham Maltings (01252 745444).
