In 1916 whilst the Somme Campaign was ongoing, the Battle of the Somme was released and seen by over 20 million people. Audiences flocked to the cinemas for a chance to see actual footage from the battlefront and in the hope of spotting their loved ones. The screening (held in connection with the First World War Centenary Partnership, led by the Imperial War Museums) will be introduced by NMNI history curator, Dr Robert Whan.
