The mythology surrounding the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme continues to underpin important aspects of contemporary of contemporary cultural and political identity. Popular memory of the Somme continues to be evoked through a variety of cultural forms that range from museums and memorials to commemorative parades and murals. A similar process can be seen in regard to the 1916 Rising and the mythology surrounding its executed leaders, with forms of remembrance ranging from official state memorials to banners and murals. The events of 1916 can be divisive and contested, but in recent years they have also provided a focus for powerful and symbolic acts of reconciliation.
In this workshop local historians Tom Hartley and Philip Orr will reflect on the legacies of the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme and how the two are commemorated.
