Lunchtime Lecture: Professor Brendan Kelly -"Shock, Shell Shock and the 1916 Easter Rising"

This lecture will focus on "shock" and "shell shock" during the 1916 Easter Rising and the First World War. More specifically, it will explore the effects of the 1916 Easter Rising on admissions to Dublin asylums for "shock" and outline the story of the Richmond War Hospital, a shell shock hospital that operated in Dublin from 1916 to 1919. The contemporary relevance of these developments will be discussed, as well as the ways in which these events changed the practices of psychiatry and psychology in the early twentieth century. Brendan Kelly is Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College, Dublin and Consultant Psychiatrist at Tallaght Hospital, Dublin.
