A sparkling exhibition opens in Stirling on 9 October, courtesy of the Incorporation of goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh. It showcases the very best in Scottish contemporary silver.
The work of ten Scottish silver smiths is featured, through objects designed for ten international celebrities in the fields of film, fashion, music, theatre and literature.
Each pair has collaborated on the design for a piece of silver from which that could have ‘a drink with a close friend’. A collection of beautiful vessels, ranging from teapots to claret jugs, an Irn Bru cup and an absinthe goblet, has been created to delight and demonstrate the diversity of the technique and practice of Scotland’s top silversmiths.
The works are funny as well as fascinating from the point of view of craft and technique. Author Ian Rankin, working with artist John Creed had an Irn Bru jug, tumblers and tray, which reference the Forth Rail Bridge in his native Fife, created to accompany his fish and chips. Billy Connolly, paired with artist Coilin O’Dubhghaill of Glasgow, had a tricycle teapot, sugar bowl and banjo spoon made.
Other celebrities include Nicola Benedetti (hot chocolate pot and mugs), Lulu (a teapot), Sharleen Spiteri (teapot and cups) and Sir Cameron MacIntosh (claret jug and beakers).
In Stirlingshire, goldsmith Graham Stewart of Dunblane has been a star in his own right for a long time, and he will be leading workshops on the family day, Saturday 10 October at the Smith.
Stirling Provost Mike Robbins commented that:
‘the exhibition brings some glamour and sparkle to Stirling in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The Smith has long been known for its pewter collection, and we are delighted to have the best in contemporary Scottish silver ware on display’.
