The Silent Ground

Jessica Holmes lives and works in London. She studied at Wimbledon School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. In this exhibition, Holmes takes the last line of Wordsworth’s poem as inspiration to examine British, French, and Prussian cannon and musket balls found on the field of the battle of Waterloo. These three large scale works on paper draw the viewer into a painted field ripe for exploration. Cannonballs dominate these works and form a non-human commentary on abandoned places, where the natural world is haunted by fragments of humanity. As in all her work, there is a sense of the fragility of man’s creations within these paintings.
