Moyse’s Hall presents an illustrated talk on the realities of smuggling, rather than the romantic myth of Kipling’s 1906 poem.
The 'free traders' played a bold and often deadly game with the law, and this talk explores how they were involved in the hugely profitable, highly illegal business of smuggling, which started far earlier than most people realise. There was also a wider range of commodities involved than is commonly believed, as duty and taxes were increased to pay for costly wars.
