The Camel that escaped the Nazis: the story behind the object

Lecture by Dr Sally Crawford, Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Archaeology, Oxford and Dr Katharina Ulmschneider, Senior Research Fellow, Worcester College, Oxford. In the Ashmolean’s East meets West gallery there is a large Tang camel. The label reads ‘Baxandall loan’, but there is more to the camel than meets the eye. This is the story of the camel, from its first documented appearance in 1930s Marburg, Germany, to its current home - and why it travelled to England with its owner, the extraordinary Paul Jacobsthal.
