Art and Existence: Heroines of Opera

Join a journey of historical female icons with composer Dr Shirley J Thompson, who has performed worldwide and is often described as “beautiful and powerful” (Le Figaro). A visionary artist and cultural activist, Shirley has been composing operas on the lives of our historical heroines and creating operatic performances. Learn more about her discoveries through Nanny of the Maroons, Dido Elizabeth Belle and The Woman Who Refused to Dance (on the ship with enslaved Africans). Accompanying the talk will be a special performance by the celebrated soprano Abigail Kelly who will perform a small selection of related material accompanied by Dr Shirley J Thompson on violin.
