Under the theme Museums for a sustainable society, from 16th to the 18th of May 2015, on the initiative of the Museum Documentation Centre in Zagreb , more than a hundred museums around Croatia will mark, with their rich programs, the 35th International Museum Day. The programs will be organized in some 70 cities, with more than 300-different events. The ceremony will begin with the European night of museums (with 40 museums participating), in which many museums will have events lasting late into the night.
This year's theme indicates the indispensable role of museums in the development of society, through promotion of new ideas and through questioning human activities in all areas of life, in order to create a sustainable perspective for the upcoming generations. Since there is a new model of behavior towards the environment and resources necessary, the Museum of Architecture in Zagreb will organize lectures and presentations about sustainable development in the field of architecture and urban planning, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka will have exhibitions which present artistic initiatives that promote openness, human rights, social justice and critical thinking as the basis for a sustainable society. An interesting initiative comes from the Tourist board of Blato village from the island of Korcula. Their program aims to educate about the reasons and history behind the village’s immigration, and connect today’s residents with numerous immigrants who left Blato at the beginning of the century, and who now live all over the world.
Museums in Croatia will place a special focus on the promotion of permanent exhibitions , organizing free guided tours, historical figures tours, exhibitions and art installations, workshops and various other events.
