Science in the 18th Century

Explore a unique collection of elegant scientific instruments and intricate models that belonged to King George III. In the 1700s it was fashionable for wealthy people to have collections of scientific instruments. Discover how the teaching of scientific principles spread beyond the elite circles of the Royal Society, to reach large sections of the population. Examine an air pump with a compression chamber, a water-raising machine and an Archimedean screw. There’s even a polemoscope, or ’jealousy glass’, used by opera goers to spy on other people in the audience.
