The last days of the Theresienstadt Ghetto: Murmelstein, Slovak Jews, and the End of the War

Theresienstadt was the only ghetto to last until the liberation. Dr Anna Hájková explores the last months of this “advantage ghetto,” explaining the manifold events leading up to the coming of the Red Army: the Slovak Jews who brought in the news about the annihilation in Auschwitz, the second visit of the International Red Cross, the charged, cunning, and exhausting negotiations of the last Elder of the Jews, Benjamin Murmelstein, with the SS, the threats of the complete annhihilation of all prisoners present, and the chaos of the death marches and the epidemic. Considering these events in wider, analytical context enables us a deeper, humane understanding of the prisoner community as well as the last chapter of the Holocaust. Dr Anna Hájková is assistant professor of European Continental History at the University of Warwick. Her manuscript on the history of Theresienstadt was awarded the Herbert Steiner and Irma Rosenberg Prizes 2014. This event is organised in partnership with the Czech Centre, London.
