Redoubt Military History Series: British Military Nurses on the Western Front with Sue Light

There is relatively little written about military nurses during the Great War. What exists is mainly based on a small number of personal memoirs, most of which concentrate on the more dramatic events which occurred in hospitals and casualty clearing stations.

They often say much about the soldiers’ war but little about the life of the nurses themselves who are often portrayed simply as ‘angels’ or ‘heroines.’

This talk attempts to give some idea of how nurses from different backgrounds coped with ‘active service’ in France and Flanders particularly when away from the wards, and tries to represent them as professional women doing the job of work for which they were trained, but definitely not always as ‘angels.’

£12 / £10 concessions. Tea and coffee served during the interval.
