Austin Osman Spare in Southwark.

Austin Osman Spare was an eccentric artist who, despite earlier promise of artistic stardom, eked out a sometimes precarious living in Southwark in his later years and died in relative obscurity and poverty. Recent fine biographies have been published by experts on Spare in recent years but, to keep his memory alive in the borough, heritage manager Judy Aitken revisits his story with this Illustrated talk. A free talk about the fascinating and eccentric life and work of the artist Austin Osman Spare, who lived and worked in Southwark in the early twentieth century. His choice of dream-like, magical themes, his sometimes disturbing imagery and his other-worldly life and attitude have meant his work has both admirers and detractors.
