Half Term Activities

Join our commemorations for the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Discover life on the Home Front and the stories of North East soldiers. Take part in a training camp where we’ll be putting recruits through their paces. Here at Beamish we work with communities across the North East in nearly all aspects of our work including our annual February Half Term project. This year we invite you to experience a First World War training camp! Working with local schools and communities in the Sunderland North and Stanley areas to explore and recreate the history and heritage of their communities. There will be the chance for visitors to experience all aspects of life in a army training camp which might not be exactly what you imagine as Gemma Stevenson our Community Events Officer explains “When you think of a First World War training camp, quite often you think of strict training regimes – of course we will be showing this aspect of our heritage but also the leisure time that soldiers had when not training, to try and give our visitors the chance to experience the true life of a solider one hundred years ago”. There will be the chance to experience firsthand all aspects of training life including fitness training, leisure activities and our soup-erb field kitchen!
