LUNCHTIME LECTURE: One of the most endearing works featured in the V&A current display Personal Favourites is a Venetian silver bowl from around 1480 with the image of a sleeping dog.
The whippet-like creature is curled up at the centre of the bowl and would only have been visible when the bowl was emptied.
Unsurprisingly dog and bowl captured the attention of collectors Arthur and Rosalinde Gilbert who were keen dog lovers themselves.
In this lunchtime lecture V&A curator Heike Zech will explore the imagery of the sleeping dog against the backdrop of the long-standing symbolism of dogs in decorative and fine arts in early modern times
