Morality and Geopolitics: The challenge of humanitarian intervention

The terms of debate on humanitarian intervention in Britain shifted dramatically between the 2011 military intervention in Libya and parliament’s vote against intervention in Syria in August 2013. As Anne Perkins argued in the Guardian earlier this year ‘the full impact of the UK’s vote against intervention in Syria has yet to be felt’ in terms of Britain’s ability to intervene in international humanitarian crises. Where does this leave Britain in light of the commitment made as part of the Stockholm Declaration on the Holocaust, article 3 of which states that: ‘with humanity still scarred by genocide, ethnic cleansing, racism, anti-semitism and xenophobia, the international community shares a solemn responsibility to fight those evils’? This special lecture on the challenge of humanitarian intervention will be given by the Rt Hon Sir Lawrence Freedman, Professor of War Studies at King's College London, a post he has held since 1982. His most recent books are A Choice of Enemies: America confronts the Middle East (2009) and Strategy: A History (2013). The event will be chaired by Phillipe Sands QC, barrister in the Matrix Chambers professor of international law at University College London.
