During the summer holidays (23 July – 29 August) the Bank of England Museum invites its younger visitors to get creative and design their own banknote to take home. There are many examples of banknotes in the Museum, from the earliest hand-written notes from the 17 century to the highly sophisticated and secure banknotes in use today. However, it is against the law to copy Bank of England notes (that would be forgery!) so your own banknote should be a completely original design.
You can be as creative as you want with every aspect of your note, from the material you would use, to the colours, the shape or even the smell! Will you include a famous historical character or a sportsperson of today? Or perhaps you will choose to include a famous building or landmark? Your imagination is the limit. But don’t forget to include some security features to make the note very difficult to copy! You can learn more about banknotes and their security features in the Museum displays and interactive screens, and at the special presentations taking place in the Museum cinema every day at 1:00pm.
A family fun day out is guaranteed with all the other Museum attractions including banknote jigsaws, a roller ball game, interactive displays and the opportunity for some safe cracking. You can also take the helm of the brand new interactive boat game and set monetary policy to keep inflation steady. Visitors can even try to lift a genuine gold bar -although, weighing 13kg, it will take many people by surprise!
