The third Earl of Burlington and his mother made Burlington House (where the Royal Academy of Arts is now based) an artistic and literary centre, comparable with the Roman palaces of Ottoboni and Ruspoli. His patronage of the arts were legendary - the poet John Gay wrote that Burlington was ‘Belov’d by every Muse’ and according to Horace Walpole, Burlington possessed ‘every Quality of Genius and Artist, except Envy’.
Burlington not only offered Handel board and lodging in his first few years in London but also provided him with introductions to an enviable network of contacts. The Burlington Circle included artists, writers, composers, patrons and connections to royalty.
This period brought about Handel’s first compositions in English, the formation of the Royal Academy of Music for Italian opera (Burlington was the primary subscriber and Teseo and Amadigi were dedicated to him), and introduced him to Queen Anne, for whom the Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne was such an instant favourite the Queen granted Handel a pension and launched him as the composer for English ceremonial occasions, including the later arrival in London of George II and Queen Caroline.
