This July sees the 70th anniversary of the deportation of Jews from Rhodes and Cos – the last communities of any significance within the Greek/Italian islands. Theirs was the last transport to leave Greece at the end of July and to be sent to Auschwitz. Of the c. 2000 victims a small number were admitted to the camp and the rest were murdered on arrival on 16 August.
This lecture will be given by Professor Anthony McElligott (University of Limerick), who has been tracking material in the archives in Germany, Italy, Greece/Rhodes and the UK. This work will be the topic of a book that will be published with Bloomsbury in the near future. The lecture will focus on the difficulty of sources, interpretation and presentation in a ‘crowded’ field of scholarly activity.
