Collectors and Collecting

The Gallery's permanent collection stems from a handful of individual's private collections. Learn who the collectors were, what and why they collected, and how the works came to reside at Pallant House Gallery. Pallant House Gallery is a ‘collection of collections’, which have been donated or bequeathed or loaned by important private collectors. This tour will look at the different collections and the personalities behind them, such as Walter Hussey the former Dean of Chichester Cathedral, a patron of the arts who commissioned work from artist friends such as Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland; Charles Kearley a businessman and builder of modernist architecture who bought the work of leading international artists, and Colin St John Wilson, an architect, academic and close friend of many of the artists whose work he has acquired. Other collections include the Geoffrey Freeman Collection of 18th century Bow Porcelain, that of Dr John Birch the Organist of Chichester Cathedral, and the Golder-Thompson Gift of contemporary Scottish prints. It explores how these people have amassed such extraordinary collections and why people collect what they do. Free with Gallery admission. No booking required. Please meet at reception.
