The Flintham Plough Play

The Foresters Morris Team will perform a Plough Play at Nottingham Castle from the village of Flintham, near Newark. The play was originally performed by young men from the village on Plough Monday, January 1914. Although suffering injuries, all the young players survived the Great War. Plough Plays are the type of Mummers' play found in the East Midlands. They are distinguished by the names of the characters in them. The characters in the Flintham Play include: Tom Fool, Recruiting Sergeant, Farmer's Man, Lady, Beelzebub, St. George and Doctor. Volunteers from the Flintham Heritage Society have collaborated in providing the manuscript and historical background of the play as part of their Heritage Lottery Fund First World War centenary project: ’Keeping the home fires burning?’.
