In this talk author and foreign correspondent, Con Coughlin, will tell the story of Winston Churchill's first war against the Afghans and the forefathers of the modern Taliban movement in the 1890s. This campaign led to Churchill's first book, where as a young cavalry lieutenant he wrote a vivid account of his first major campaign. A hundred years later this book is read by British and American military commanders today. Coughlin will provide a rare insight into Churchill's first campaign and the parallels it holds with conflict in Afghanistan today. This talk is the first installment of our three-part series exploring Churchill's early career and his role in the First World War. The talk starts at 7pm (doors open at 6.30pm) and tickets include the opportunity to view Churchill War Rooms after the event until 9pm. Con Coughlin will be taking part in a book signing after the end of the talk and copies of Churchill's First War will be available from the book shop on the night.
