Memory and construction of identity
In the
Identity room the aim is to show how the penafiel municipality has evolved over the ages. The documents and articles displayed (dating from the 9th to the 20th century) have been made more appealing with graphic animation, and by their visual and interactive treatment. The construction of identity is also illustrated with some special items and the prominence given to some figures that are part of Penafiel's local collective memory.
Words are all important, and everything revolves around a central case that contains and displays the legendary quilt that is hung from the Town Hall balcony during the Ascension Day parade. Some exhibits that are displayed more distinctively stand on this case. We hear the names of the long-dead foundres of this land and their successors, from the earliest days of written records.
