The Annual Denys Haynes Memorial Lecture: The art of ancient Greek theatre

Theatre was born in Greece in the mid-6th century BC, with choral dances held in honour of the god Dionysos. These performances became a vital part of urban life, with plays being staged in competition at the god’s annual festivals. Through depictions of actors, sets and performances, this lecture explores the emergence of theatre as we know it from evidence on vase-paintings and in sculpture between the 5th and 1st centuries BC. The lecturer, Dr Mary Louise Hart, is Associate Curator of Antiquities at the J Paul Getty Museum, California, and curated the exhibition of the same name at The Getty Villa in Malibu in 2010.
