St. John of God, the founder of an order devoted to the care of the sick and poor, was praying before an altar in the church of Our Lady of Granada in city of that name when Our Lady and St. John the Evangelist appeared to him , placing a crown of thorns upon the head of the kneeling saint indicating that he was to share closely in the sufferings of Christ, his master.
