CRE STRANGE, Robert, Sir; (Scottish; 1721-1792) AFTER ROSA, Salvator; (Italian; 1615-1673) This is one of three engravings by Robert Strange that reproduce paintings in the founder, William Hunter's collection. Each shows one of the most expensive paintings that Hunter bought in the 1770s: Guido Reni's Offspring of Love, Murillo's Infant Christ as the Good Shepherd, and this one, 'Rosa's' Laomedon Detected. It is a tribute to both patron and engraver that they were dedicated to the documentation of works of art, but sadly Strange's engravings have not ensured the works' authenticity. Rather, the attributions of all three have now been overturned. Following the publication of this engraving of Hunter's Laomedon painting, James Barry made use of the image in his 1776 etching The Birth of Venus. The head of the sea god Poseidon in that print has features very similar to the figure in this engraving after Hunter's painting.
