Nemški umetnik Jan Oeltjen, ki je od leta 1931 živel v Sloveniji, je ustvarjal v različnih tehnikah. Slikal je olja na platnu, akvarele, bil je tudi kipar, najpomembnejši del njegovega opusa pa zavzemajo grafike. Razmeroma kratek čas, med letoma 1920 in 1924, se je intenzivno ukvarjal s tehniko lesoreza, in v njej ustvaril nekatera od svojih najpomembnejših del, mdr. cikle Ribič, Ledolom v Livlandiji, Srečanje, Trgatev, Alpske krajine. V njih je upodabljal raznolike motive, v večini doživetja iz prve svetovne vojne in svojo ljubezensko zgodbo s soprogo Elso Oeltjen Kasimir. Prav prvo srečanje z njo na otoku Ischia leta 1910 predstavlja osrednjo temo cikla Srečanje. Čas, v katerem je cikel nastal, je bil za umetnika izredno čustven. Še vedno je namreč v sebi nosil spomin na številna vojna doživetja, hkrati pa je bil na preizkušnji njegov zakon, ki ga je oviralo ženino razmerje z Oskarjem Kokoschko, umetnikom, čigar vpliv je v omenjenem ciklu moč opaziti tudi na slogovni ravni, zlasti v grobih, ostrih obrisnih linijah figur in v njihovih proporcih.
Na grafičnem listu Srečanje 1 je vsa pozornost namenjena zaljubljenima Elsi in Janu, ki sta upodobljena v prvem planu, pred morsko krajino. Posebej poudarjene so njune roke, naslikane z izrazito ekspresivnostjo, skorajda identično gestikulacijo pa bi lahko interpretirali kot naklonjenost drug drugemu.
