German Tool Museum

Deutsches Werkzeugmuseum; Historisches Zentrum der Stadt Remscheid

The German Tool Museum has existed in Remscheid since 1967. It is unique in Germany and accommodates an extensive collection of tools from the Stone Age to the 21st century, which is remarkable from a technological, sociological and cultural point of view. The importance of this collection, which includes mechanical and electronic tools as well as machinery, reaches far beyond the region as it is of special interest for the further development of craft and industry.

After alterations and extensions were brought to an end in 1996, a new concept was developed for the museum. It has served as the basis for the German Tool Museum since its reopening in 1998.

The restructured museum of tools shows the importance of the Remscheid area as a centre of the German tools industry. Furthermore, it demonstrates the development of the tool production, the application of tools and the tool trade in Germany.
