Museo Universidad de Navarra

The Museum University of Navarra is the museum of contemporary art of the University of Navarra. The building, located on the campus of Pamplona, Navarre, was designed by architect Rafael Moneo and was inaugurated on 22^nd of January 2015 by the Kings of Spain Felipe VI and Queen Letizia Ortiz.

The donation of the collection of Maria Josefa Huarte Beaumont in 2008 prompted the creation of the Museum University of Navarra. The collection of Maria Josefa, daughter of businessman and politician Félix Huarte Goñi, includes 49 paintings and sculptures by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tapies, Mark Rothko, Pablo Palazuelo and Jorge Oteiza.

In addition, this donation joins the legacy of photographer José Ortiz Echagüe's received in 1981. This photographic legacy has been expanded to bring together more than 14,000 photographs and 100,000 negatives from the nineteenth century to the present, with contemporary artists (Joan Fontcuberta, Lynne Cohen, Roland Fisher, or Javier Vallhonrat), other relevant history of photography in the nineteenth century (Viscount Vigier, Alphonse de Launay, Gustave Beaucorps, Jean Laurent and Jose Martinez Sanchez), representatives of the 'new picture' twentieth century (Pere Català Pic or Josep Renau), or photojournalists (as Robert Capa, Agustí Centelles or Henri Cartier-Bresson).

The Museum bases its foundations on three pillars; research, teaching and spreading art to society.

RESEARCH

The Museum is characterized by its multidisciplinary approach to art. As it will be constructed at the heart of the University, it will be surrounded by a variety of types of knowledge and learning, which will help to bring about research based on synergies. The Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of Navarra aims to create a space in which students from different Faculties, Departments and Schools can integrate their knowledge. In that way, it will also be a new cultural reference center for the University.

EDUCATION

The Museum plans to participate and implement learning programs in order to foment the university community and service the Navarra community. Its presence on campus will improve the quality of education in classrooms as well as help to promote art in all of the faculties and in the university life of its students.

SPREADING OF ART TO SOCIETY

The Museum's artistic activity seeks to dialogue within the cultural and creative panorama of regional, national and international contemporary art through temporary exhibitions, presentations on the collection of the Museum, public programs, and art events and performances. It will be a center of visual contemporary culture that will concentrate and expand its cultural, artistic and academic activity of the University of Navarra.
