Museu da Quinta de Santiago

The core mission of this museum is to preserve and promote the history of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira through the arts. The museum is overseen by the municipality of Matosinhos and opened to public in 1996.

The museum is housed in a historic building, possibly concluded in 1896, which was built as the home of the Santiago de Carvalho e Sousa family, with a project by the italian architect Nicola Bigaglia. It illustrates the deep urban and social transformations in the city of Matosinhos-Leça at the end of the nineteenth century and along the twentieth century.

It belongs since 2003 to the Portuguese Museum Network and it is one of the founding museums of MuMa – Matosinhos Museum Network.

Since 2009, Quinta de Santiago integrates 3 buildings: 

-The museum, with two distinct areas: the first floor is dedicated to local and social history and illustrates the local lifestyles at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. On the second floor, there is a painting and sculpture collection, based in the work of artists António Carneiro, Agostinho Salgado, Augusto Gomes, Aurélia de Souza e Joaquim Lopes;

-the Irene Vilar building has a multipurpose auditorium and an area for family workshops;

-and the Casa do Bosque, containing the Cascata Gigante (traditional handicraft model), a nearly 13-feet wide model representing Leça da Palmeira at the beginning of the twentieth century, built by José Moreira and donated to the museum.

Around the spacious garden, visitors can find sculptures by Álvaro Siza, Rui Anahory and Lagoa Henriques.
