Spitsbergen Airship Museum

Spitsbergen Airship Museum is the northernmost aviation museum in the world and is about North Pole expeditions made by airship.

The Museum opened in November 2008 in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. It recounts the heroic efforts made to reach the North Pole by aviation pioneers at the turn of the last century and includes the America, Norge and Italia expedtions. The nations that participated in these historical events include Norway, Russia, Italy, America, Sweden, Holland, France and Finland. Controversy and a general lack of information has often surrounded these great expeditions. The Museum seeks to communicate, in a neutral manner and as correctly as possible, an understanding of the events that took place during and after these expeditions. As such, the Spitsbergen Airship Museum stands as one of Norway's only independant museums. In July 2012 the Museum moved premises to a new custom built building in the centre of town.

The exhibition consist of a large variety of books, postcards, clothes, plane models, old newspapers, maps, philately, photos, telegrams, airship parts and more. Several hours of the original expedition films are running continuously.

The airship shop offers new and old books, locally hand made artifacts, jewellery, fridge magnets, postcards and more.

Reopens in February.
