Messner Mountain Museum Juval
The museum in Juval Castle in Vinschgau is dedicated to the Magic of the Mountain and houses several fine art collections: a Tibetica collection, a gallery of paintings of the world’s holy mountains, a collection of masks from five continents, a unique Gesar of Ling exhibition, a Tantra Room and the Expedition Cellar. Trained guides are available to explain all the exhibits. There is also a small mountain zoo, home-grown produce at the Schlosswirt tavern, excellent wines in Unterortl and, at the foot of the hill, a farmhouse shop. Juval Castle always makes a big impression in so many ways.
Juval Castle was built on a prehistoric site by Hugo von Montalban around 1278. In 1368 it passed to the lords of Starkenberg and, following several more changes of ownership, was acquired by the Sinkmoser family in 1540. That was the heyday of Juval Castle. After that, title to the castle was transferred to the Hendl family, who sold it to a farmer by the name of Josef Blaas in 1813. The castle then fell into disrepair, before being purchased by a Dutch colonialist called William Rowland in 1913, who restored the building with great care. Since 1983 the castle has been the home of Reinhold Messner, who also uses it to house several art collections. In the meantime Reinhold Messner has completely refurbished Juval Castle with full respect for all three phases of construction.
MMM Juval is open from the fourth Sunday of March to 30 June and from 1 September to the first Sunday in November.
