Established in 1921, the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art has turned into one of the oldest and largest art museums in Lithuania. It is the only place in the world with the creative legacy of the most famous Lithuanian artist, composer and public figure M. K. Čiurlionis (1875-1911). The paintings and graphics of this brilliant Lithuanian artist are exhibited in the modern renovated premises since 2003. In the Music Hall of the museum you can listen to his music.
Museum has open funds of Lithuanian Folk Art. More than 3000 folk sculptures: from the smallest Pensive Christ of 3 cm, a well-loved St. John of Nepomuk; during the press ban years – a beloved sculptural composition of St. Anne who taught to read the Virgin Mary, etc. and the images of Saints.
At the exposition Lithuanian art. 14th – 19th centuries are represented examples of the development of visual and decorative arts in Lithuania over 600 years. Room I presents earliest examples, unique and valuable discoveries. Room II – the oldest and most valuable Gothic Madonnas. Room III – elements of interiors and apparel; works of art, tapestry, rich gallery of sculptural, painted and carved portraits.
The museum also hosts various cultural events: concerts for children and professional performers, book presentations, lectures, seminars, scientific conferences, guided tours, and educational programs specifically made for children and youth. In the museum shop, the visitors can buy reproductions of M. K. Čiurlionis art works, postcards, original souvenirs, various accessories, books.
