Anna Magganiks – UNDERGROUND Portraits of a Disappearing World
From January 24 to 31, 2026, artist Anna Magganiks (Estonia) presents her powerful series UNDERGROUND – a striking collection of large-scale portraits of cisgender coal miners. The exhibition is a visual tribute to an era that shaped the Ruhr region like no other.
In intense, close-up portraits, Magganiks captures miners just moments after emerging from deep underground: marked by their labor, filled with pride, covered in the dust of their work – and carrying the dignity of a profession that defined generations in the Ruhr.
Opening Event: Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 4:00 PM Introduction by Dr. Friedrich Stavenhagen, art historian The artist will be present. Afterwards: Winter barbecue within walking distance at Mülheim’s Stadthalle.
