Sneakers today are an undeniable part of our daily lives and are worn by everyone from young people to adults, and from streetwear to high fashion. But behind this everyday shoe lies a world of innovations, technologies and societal changes. The exhibition Sneaker Evolution, from May 24, 2025 to April 2026 at the Shoe Quarter, takes you on a journey through the hidden world behind your sneakers.
A CONTINUING EVOLUTION
Sneaker Evolution explores the evolution of the sneaker, from the invention of the vulcanized rubber sole in the 19th century to modern innovations such as 3D printing and upcycling. The exhibition features one hundred and fifty iconic sneakers, from the Converse All Star and Nike Air Max to the Puma Speedcat and the ON Spraylight. These sneakers illustrate not only the technological breakthroughs that have gone into the evolution of the sneaker, but also how these innovations have influenced sports performance. At the same time, they highlight the cultural aspect of the sneaker, from hip-hop to fashion. The sneaker is more than a shoe; it is a symbol of identity, connection and social change.
INNOVATION & SUSTAINABILITY
The focus of the Sneaker Evolution exhibition is on innovation and sustainability. You explore developments in materials - think biodegradable or circular raw materials - and innovative production methods. On the second floor of the Shoe Quarter, you'll dive into the history of the sneaker, the influence of the designer "behind it," the personal stories of sneakerheads and how sneakers connect subcultures. Downstairs in the Atrium, it's all about the future: from repairing and upcycling worn sneakers to designing with AI and producing with robots. There you'll see designers at work and reflect on the footprint and life cycle of sneakers.
CHANGING THEMES
Part of the exhibition will change during its run, there are three themes:
Each theme comes to life through workshops, master classes and presentations by designers and experts such as Material Sense, Isabel Wolfs and Studio Hagel. For both professionals and students, as well as sneakerheads and there are hands-on workshops, educational projects and creative competitions.
