Faience ring bezel, originally thought by the museum staff to be a centipede. Then thought to be a horned hedgehog, now thought to be a gazelle with palm branch. For hedgehogs see: Aufrere et Erroux-Morfin 2001. Au sujet du hérissan. Aryballes et préparation magiques à base de produits tirés de cet animal. In Aufrère, S. H. ed. 2001. 'Encyclopédie religiese de l'Univers végétal' Vol 2, 521-532. Broken and mended. This item seems to have been found in the 'Smenkahre' Hall at Amarna. See Pendelbury City of Akhenaten II, 115, pl. XLIX I.D.II and City of Akehenaten III, 85. According to Pendlebury (1951, 60) the 'Coronation Hall' was a later addition and a 'rush-job' and many of the bricks were stamped with the name of Smenkare. For more information on the hedgehog see Friedman, F.D. ed. 1998. 'Gifts of the Nile Ancient Egyptian Faience' p220 nos.. 98 and 99. For a discussion of a scaraboid hedgehog found at Amarna see Stevens, Anna, 2006. Private Religion at Amarna. The Material Evidence' p 59.
