Monsieur Sergent

Grandfather of Mrs. Bowes, commanded a Battalion in the Vendean War during the French Revolution. On his return to Paris he was falsely accused and condemned to death in 1792 but escaped the guillotine. This painting is said to have been copied from a chalk drawing taken when he was imprisoned in 1792. Size: 22.2 x 16.5 cm
